Latest information for vessels accessing Port Nelson during Alert Level 4​

Accessing Port Nelson

During Alert Level 4, Port Nelson is only allowing the arrival of essential service vessels or those carrying essential cargo. This applies to all container, log, breakbulk, RoRo and commercial fishing vessels.  Cruise ships are currently not allowed access to the harbour.

In accordance with  Maritime New Zealand and port regulations all vessels must adhere to the following:

Pre-Arrival Requirements: 
  •  Masters declaration to be complete with our Covid-19 reporting requirements.
  • Additionally, Vessel Master must declare if there are any sick crew members on board, or not, when calling Nelson Maritime Radio (Ch 12) one hour prior to pilot boarding.
  • All handrails, door handles, lift controls for the route the pilot is to take to the bridge (preferably external) and bridge surfaces, bridge equipment and rails must be wiped clean immediately prior to the pilot boarding.
  • Where possible, one hour before the pilot embarkation time, non-essential crew should remain clear of the designated route from the pilot embarkation point (either pilot ladder, accommodation ladder etc.) to the wheelhouse, especially where the route is within enclosed spaces.
  • Any temperature monitoring of crew records to be readily available.  
 
 Working Protocols:
  • ​All international vessels have had crew shore leave cancelled. 
  • Shore leave is only available for New Zealand based vessels, New Zealand Citizens and Residents. Crew can leave the vessel to check the draft lines where requested by the vessels Master.
  • Vessels are pre-screened as part of the Pratique process. If any concerns related to COVID-19 or other quarantinable diseases are identified, a separate risk assessment will be undertaken with the Health Authorities as per the Pandemic Contingency Plan.
  • All crew on non-NZ based vessels will be required to wear masks if they are in the same room or vicinity as PNL team members. Where the crew are required to come within 2.0m of crew members for periods that in accumulation are longer than 10 minutes then the crew will be required to wear gloves
